is an average, everyday comic shop manager… that also does a podcast, is on AMC’s Comic Book Men
, has drawn Batman
for DC Comics
multiple times, appeared in multiple movies and has this third creator-owned series with Bryan Johnson
on the shelves now. That’s what happens when you go to high school with Kevin Smith
and turned him onto comic books in the first place. Flanagan sat down with Mike Raicht
to talk about Cryptozoic Man
being published by Dynamite Entertainment
. MIKE RAICHT: How did Cryptozoic Man come to life for you guys?
WALT FLANIGAN: The Cryptozoic Man design/ idea came from the old 1980s plastic man Saturday morning cartoon. I picked up the entire series on DVD at a close out store for 5 bucks about 2 years ago… on one the episodes plastic man faced off against a villain who was half man half Bigfoot… I thought that was so cool… and if a man who is half Bigfoot is cool? How about A man who is than 1/4 Jersey Devil, a 1/4 Loch Ness Monster as well as part Bigfoot! Even cooler! MR: Following your other two collaborations, Karney and War of the Undead, when did you decide this book was the next book to pull the trigger on?
WF: It’s actually something that took a lot longer to bring to life than I thought it would have…But when the producers on comic book men started saying AMC wanted to see a pitch to a publisher…that’s when the ball really got rolling. MR: You guys were able to launch this title in an amazingly unique way with a televised pitch session with Dynamite. I can’t imagine the pressure of that.
WF: I get nervous enough sending in a pitch over e-mail without having to worry about television cameras in the room. Do you think this type of launch can ramp up the pressure or have you guys remained calm about the whole thing? Yea, I imagine our way of pitching the book to dynamite was the first time in comic book history that a pitch was filmed for a television show.as far as pressure? It was a bit nerve racking in the actual pitch. I certainly didn’t want to hear Dynamite wasn’t interested and that have that seen on national tv. MR: How would you describe launching a brand new title?
WF: It’s so fun when you can create a new character and universe to work in…there are no limits or restrictions. So you get to go crazy a bit! MR: You both have both done this before having launched both Karney and War of the Undead at IDW together. Is there anything you learned from those experiences which you brought to this book?
WF: Not really… The one thing we learned since Karney and War of the Undead were released is we were in a position to market the series in a different way than we did with those other 2 series from IDW. Since the release of War of the Undead, Bryan and I started a podcast along with an old friend named Brian Quinn of the hit TV show impractical jokers called “TELL EM STEVE DAVE” and we have slowly built a very loyal, supportive listener base that really came through for us in ordering the Cryptozoic Man set. We marketed the book substantially through our podcast and sold a lot of comics. I can’t thank those listeners enough who ordered the book in support of Bryan and myself. MR: You guys clearly have a pretty tight relationship to begin with, but from experience, co-writing can have some amazingly fun highs and be complicated and difficult at other times. How is it working as a writing team?
WF: Well, first off there’s no way I can call what I do as co- writing… I just offer some suggestions or more so visual suggestions… Bry does all the writing. I just came in at the beginning and offered more a plot or outline to Bryan… he’s done all the heavy lifting as far as writing goes. MR: How do you guys handle it?
WF: I gave him some character designs, some plot points i wanted to try to get in there and lay out some things i wanted to draw in the series and let Bry go to town. MR: Obviously, with you on art you have the final say, right?
WF: I guess so but if Bry felt strongly about changing something I drew or didn’t draw? I’d do what he asked. MR: I love the out of this world sci-fi, horror mix you have going on in this book. What would each of you consider your main influences while working on this title?
WF: Thanks… Wow. So many things I can point to as influences… From Swamp Thing, to Warlock, to the Animal Vegetable Mineral Man… The list goes on and on… Let’s just say any Marvel comic from the 70s and every DC comic from the 80s is an influence as well as the old television show “In Search Of” MR: What is the best thing Brian brings to your partnership?
WF: His insane, skewed but often very subtle weird outlook… Sometimes the creepiest thing is the most subtle thing he wrote on the page… I love that. MR: How would both of you recommend Cryptozoic Man to those looking for something new to try at the comic shop?
WF: Hmmmm, how about “You looking to take a trip”? Wanna sit in on the strangest tea party the universes have ever seen? Than give the cryptozoic man a go. It’s your ticket to the creepiest cosmic spookshow ever witnessed!” MR: Do you have more Cryptozoic Man planned beyond the initial 4 issue arc or are you going to develop a new property together?
WF: I guess that’s really up to dynamite more than us if we will see more cryptozoic man. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/11/25/comic-book-mens-walt-flanagan-on-cryptozoic-man/

Bursting from the pages of Jennifer Blood, writer Fred Van Lente (Incredible Hercules, DIE!namite) and artist Joseph Cooper invite readers to meet the Ninjettes in their new spotlight series this September! With a story evoking the likes of Hunger Games, Squid Game, and more, this is going to be a can't-miss action romp!
Corrupt and twisted government forces think they've got their solution to stop violence among young people. They've devised a "Profile," a range of personality and attitudes that they feel can pinpoint those prone to these acts before they strike. So then, what better way to deal with these identified students than whisking them away blinded by black hoods, and forcing them into a brutal battle royale death match to determine which will move on to an elite black ops assassin training program? That sounds just perfect!
Readers will meet a new roster of potential Ninjettes, as some distrust and rebel against their captors and the system, while others buy in and are eager to become trained operatives with a license to kill. Readers should be warned though, this title is set to stack up a significant body count, maybe even starting on the first page. One can't get attached to any one Ninjette too much. Except maybe Steph, a politically active cartoonist who believes she's only been targeted for her beliefs. She doesn't have a violent bone in her body, but in order to escape the Concrete Dojo and exact revenge on her captors, that may need to change.
"My favorite thing to do in comics is to put characters in extreme situations and see how they react--and how ...

The streets of New York City run red as a mysterious organization strangles its systems, urging Masquerade and the Scarlet Sisters to unite once more, in a thrilling one-shot coming this September from writer Alex Segura.
A cult-like force has infested their city, taking control of both criminal and political power, and the Scarlet Sisters are called upon to solve this twisted puzzle. Joined by their red threads and shared thirst for justice, Masquerade, Lady Satan, and the Woman in Red form a deadly trio of crimefighters and detectives. When one of their own allies is murdered, the case gets all the more muddled.
Acclaimed author Alex Segura is no stranger to noir and crime tradition, from his hit independent comic The Black Ghost, to the recently released novel Secret Identity, which inventively blends mystery with fictional tales of the comic book industry. For Scarlet Sisters, he's joined by rising artist Emiliana Pinna (Red Sonja) for his Dynamite debut.
"I've known [editor] Nate Cosby forever - since we both started in comics - and I've always wanted to work with him. His books always feature great characters, strong creative voices, and a level of quality I appreciate. When he asked me about pitching a one-shot in the Dynamite universe featuring the Scarlet Sisters, I was intrigued. Emiliana and I have crafted a street-level, character-driven crime tale that will hopefully leave readers intrigued and eager for more."
To match the trio of heroines, three additional brilliant artists have joined the case with their covers. Lesley "Leirix" Li, Joseph Michael Linsner, and the rising star Jacob Edgar each lend their hand.
Fans shouldn't miss ...

Jump in with Vampirella on her latest rollercoaster adventure through time and space, as she attempts to thwart an evil sorceress who wants Vampi's own body! Join Jeff Parker and Benjamin Dewey for Vampirella: Mindwarp this September.
The conniving Baroness Gruzal already has her ancient crown that bestows her dreadful powers of sorcery, but she's hungry for more. She wants to live a thousand years, if not more, and everyone's favorite immortal vampiress has what she wants. How will the Daughter of Drakulon escape the clutches of a foe that wants her power, her immortality, and her flesh and blood?
"Getting to work with Ben Dewey on a book again is a rare joy, and then for it to be classic Vampirella puts this over the top for me," said writer Jeff Parker. "Drawing monsters and mystic weirdness is a strength of his, but it's the personality he gives Vampi that really makes this sing. I think readers are going to be pleasantly surprised by the places this story goes. The Baroness is a very forward foe who doesn't hide her obsession with Vampi. Also, we're not forgetting that in addition to being a horror book, Vampirella was also gothic romance back in the day."
Vampirella is busy minding her own business, on a romp through the supernatural-prone New Orleans to tussle with some werewolves and catch some gumbo. Little does she know, a young man named Ren is stalking her, at the behest of Gruzal. When his plan doesn't quite go as expected, he becomes Vampi's begrudging sidekick of sorts, as she attempts to thwart ...

Once upon a time... every hero has journeys that you wouldn't expect, in far away lands, facing fearsome monsters, being manipulated by envious queens, or stalked through the woods by hungry wolves. This August Dynamite debuts three special one-shots, as their three biggest characters are put in the shoes of classic fables.
Red Sonja stumbles upon a mysterious giant bean stalk, suddenly sprouted from the Earth via magical beans. Atop the imposing climb resides some captivating treasure - oh, and also a giant craving human flesh and bones. The She-Devil With a Sword has never turned down a battle like this before, so readers shouldn't expect anything less than thrilling action as she overcomes her latest foe. Writer Jordan Clark (Samurai Sonja, Aquaman) spins this yarn.
Mirror, mirror, who is the fairest of them all? On the planet Barsoom, that would be the one and only Dejah Thoris. Which means the envious queen has struck the Princess of Mars out into the wilderness. Only to make countless friends and allies in her exile, unlike any she'd seen before. Her time will come to return to the queen and lay claim to her rightful throne. Ron Marz (Silver Surfer, Green Lantern) returns to the Warlord of Mars mythos following his celebrated 2014 take.
Last but certainly not least, Vampirella gets an extra accessory for her iconic costume, as she rocks a famous red hooded cape. With story by Soo Lee, Vampirella is off to deliver wine and cake to her beloved grandmother. A horrid, fanged beast stalks the woods, hunting easy ...

Lady Hel rises in her first solo series spotlight this summer to heat up comic store shelves and collector's hands in a thrilling story from the world of Chaos!
The mysterious Lady Hel is the ultimate personification of death itself. Or well... she was. After messing with the half demon, half vampiress Purgatori, her authority and powers were stripped away by Purgi. Now deposed, Lady Hel must find a way to claw her way back to her rightful throne, by any means necessary.

In this tale of horrific gods and monsters, there is bound to be plenty of clashes between them, and fans won't want to miss this ripping and tearing action!
Fan-favorite writer Erik Burnham, beloved for his work on franchises like Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more, returns to Chaos! following his contributions in the bestselling Red Sonja: Age of Chaos!. Their story also follows loosely in the threads of Vampirella vs. Purgatori, one of the last major chapters in the Chaos! crew's history, but fans can jump right into this first issue!
"I was intrigued by Lady Hel during the little bit I got to use her in the Red Sonja: Age of Chaos mini, she seemed like a character that would fit well into a story with tropes from across mythology, which is one of the kinds of stories I love to tell," said writer Erik Burnham (Ghostbusters, Red Sonja). "Turns out that that was exactly the case, and between that and the place ...

Though, he holds his tongue on spoiling which side might win in this battle.
"Let's just say that, no matter which side you're on, you'll find stuff to make you laugh. And, if you're not careful, you may get splattered with slime or toxic waste, too," said writer Sholly Fisch.

The legendary title Savage Tales returns this July to heat up the summer with a special anthology with stunning artwork and stories. Across four stories, readers will get to hang with their favorites Red Sonja and Vampirella as written by Scott Brian Wilson, as well as classics Allan Quatermain and Captain Gullivar Jones by David Avallone.
Red Sonja's "The Executioner's Sword" features the art of Al Barrionuevo (Batman Gotham Knights, Storm), as the She-Devil deals with a horrific mix of magic and swordcraft.
"Missionaries of Madness" starring Alan Quatermain with art by Will Rio pits the legendary hunter against a cult worshipping Cthulhu. Equipped with just a rifle, can Quatermain stand against the dread of the Great Old Ones?
The stories starring Vampirella and Captain Gullivar Jones are drawn by two up and coming artists from the legendary Kubert School. Founded by the innovative Joe Kubert, known for his acclaimed war, superhero, drama, and autobiographical comics, the prestigious institution offers students an unparalled education in cartooning and graphic art.
Vampirella stars in the comically titled "Horrible People Doing Horrible Things To Horrible People" for a Warren era styled morality tale. Kubert School artist Mariano Benitez Chapo is excited to take on this classicly styled story.
Captain Gullivar Jones is drawn by Kubie Hamish Cook, in "His War." Taking place years after his adventure on Mars, Jones finds himself amidst a new darker war that may just lead to his redemption.
The legacy of Savage Tales and other anthology mags in its vein rests just as much on standout covers. Arthur Suydam depicts Vampirella in an homage and now companion to his cover starring Red Sonja for Dynamite's ...
