Corinna Bechko, writer of Aliens/Vampirella #3, talks with Ian Parker, co-creator/co-plotter of Cage Hero #1, about his book. Both comics are on sale now. Cover art byRenato Rei.

CORINNA BECHKO: The theme of dislocation seems to be a big part of this story. Did you personally move around a lot as a kid?

IAN PARKER: Actually, no. As a kid, I grew up in East Meadow, New York, and lived there for my entire childhood. But in high school I had a very good friend whose father was in the military. He moved around a ton and never was able to establish himself in one location. The constant changing of friends and environments took a toll on him. Fortunately, his father was stationed in East Meadow for his sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school and he was able to create a group of friends through the sports that he participated in.

CB: Special attributes aside, it seems as if Ryder has the additional gift of possessing an outsider’s perspective on the social structure at his school. His grandfather and teachers think this means he lacks focus, but I’m wondering if it might not be the “secret weapon” that allows him to weather the changes in his life as well. Was that something which emerged naturally from the original concept or was it found more in the scripting stage?

IP: I think a combination of both. With the original concept, Ryder was always the type that wouldn’t let his change of environment stop him from achieving his goals. At the same time, when we hit the scripting stage, that is really when we hit it in stride and dove into his outsider’s prospective.

CB: It’s clear even from this first issue that much of the drama and intrigue in this story will revolve around the world of mixed martial arts, and I understand that’s something you know quite a lot about. Was it a struggle to pull back far enough so that Cage Hero could be understood by an audience that might be unfamiliar with even the basics of this kind of contest?

IP: Funny you mention that! I don’t know if I would call it a struggle. I would say it was more of an obstacle to overcome. My goal with Cage Hero was to put the sport of mixed martial arts in a good light. The sport takes a ton of discipline, desire and, most importantly, heart! These men and women that participate in the sport are some of the hardest working athletes in the world. For those that are unfamiliar with the sport of mixed martial arts, I chose to take the time to break down each aspect of the sport and show how it can be used for good and not just for the assumed violence that is sometimes portrayed.

CB: I’m sure that everyone reading this first issue will be dying to know exactly what is in the box, and what the things we’ve already seen mean. Did you know exactly what was in the box when you started this project? Do you now?

IP: From Day 1, I knew what was in the box. I felt that it was important to establish the importance of the object the box protects. On a side note, every detail and aspect of this story just flowed from my brain right onto the computer screen. I can promise you this: there are plenty of surprises along the way, and plenty of questions that I have decided to not answer and leave wide open.

CB: What was it like working with writer Rik Hoskin? Did you and Kevin Eastman have everything worked out before the scripting stage, or was there a lot of collaboration?

IP: Working with Rik was quite the honor. He really took the time to get to know me and understand my vision. He contributed a ton of great ideas and really helped the story come to life! Kevin and I had the majority of the story worked out, but there was also a solid amount of collaboration. Kevin and I connected very well and bounced ideas back and forth based off of my vision of how I saw Cage Hero. When Rik jumped on board, as I mentioned before, he really understood my vision. Rik had some really great ideas and I gave him the green light to add what he thought would work to the story. After it was all said and done, I think we have something really special here with Cage Hero.

Dynamite announces a pair of stunning exclusive variant covers featuring Red Sonja and Vampirella by powerhouse duo Jim Balent and Holly Golightly, available right now on Indiegogo!

"I’m a huge fan of Frank Thorne’s work, especially on the Red Sonja Series!," said Jim Balent. "Although I will never surpass his depiction of this She-Devil With a Sword, I could not pass up this opportunity to illustrate one of my favorite covers he created. I consider this a huge honor to have my cover on his iconic issue."

"Lush and glamorous, romantic, goth and melodramatic... as a teen, all of these qualities pulled me into Vampirella’s world," said Holly Golightly. "I wanted to be her best friend and join her in all her adventures. It’s a dream come true to share my passion for her and Jose Gonzalez’s art through my cover with other Vampi fans!“

This is actually a very special project for both Balent and Golightly, who have long been fans of these iconic characters and that influence is seen in their styles and work to this day.

Holly was such a big fan of Vampirella, and particularly the sensual stylings of her definitive 1970s artist Jose Gonzalez, that she used an image of the Drakulonian for her high school graduation yearbook page! As she navigated growing up and honing her artistry, Holly identified with the outsider nature of Vampi and the macabre horror of those original stories. Her favorite issue was the 1972 Annual, which featured a deep roster of top artists across 64 pages like Gonzalez, Wally Wood, Jeffrey Catherine Jones, Neal Adams, and more. Which is why her exclusive new art is adorning a limited-edition printing of that issue and at magazine size!

Dynamite is proud to present the kick off for Year Two of Christopher Priest’s instant classic run on Vampirella, starting a new story arc with issue #16!

Flowing like the blood rivers of Drakulon from the first epic arc “Seduction of the Innocent” and interweaving with “Numerology” over in companion title Sacred Six, Priest takes Vampi back to her roots with “Interstellar.” With #15 sandwiched in between as a spotlight done-in-one tale and great jumping-on point.

Those familiar with the Daughter of Drakulon’s origin know it shares elements with some other luminaries of her native medium. From the confused man accidentally landing on the “shores” of her native land, to her undercover alien immigrant status on Earth. Now with her infamous mother, Lilith, vanished under mysterious circumstances, Ella must return to her home planet to rescue her – maybe. To do so, she must retrace her steps back to her beginning, find that man, and recreate the accident that brought him to Drakulon. And what she finds there is a tribunal against Lilith for the ravaging drought, social unrest, and economic disaster left in her wake. While they turn their eyes to the plentiful “cattle” on Earth full of life-sustaining blood…

“The overwhelming reception to our 50th-anniversary launch prompted Dynamite to expand our take on America’s favorite space vampire,” said writer Christopher Priest. “Shifting some story into our new Sacred Six title, clearing the way for a return to the character’s science fiction roots here as we journey beyond our domestic settings into the weird and horrific planet flowing with rivers of blood. How will Vampirella star in two books at one time? We’ve got that covered. Trust me!”

Priest is again joined by series ...

Not only is the entire 90 issue, 12 volume epic of Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, and company's The Boys included, but Dynamite is shaking things up by letting readers side with "the supes!" The Project Superpowers franchise, initially orchestrated by superstar artist and creator Alex Ross, has been added for those who wish to defy Billy Butcher. The most recent Death-Defying 'Devil storyline by acclaimed writer Gail Simone is one of the included titles. And the even newer first two issues of the sequel/prequel to The Boys, Dear Becky have been added. Which side are the "good guys" and which are the "bad guys?" Welcome to The Boys! Just in time for the launch of Season 2 on Prime Video, Dynamite launches a special Kickstarter campaign for fans and collectors to get a trio of limited edition commemorative comics! Support the campaign on Kickstarter here!

Never before available, Dynamite is creating logo and trade dress-free "virgin" variants of three of the most important issues of the genre-defying smash hit original comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson to celebrate the new season. These special releases are the perfect addition to any longtime The Boys fan's complete collection, or a fantastic starting point for newcomers.

The Boys exist in a world of superheroes, just like many popular comics. But with the wit of Ennis and Robertson, these supes are corrupt and out of control, driven by fame, fortune and debauchery above their power and responsibility. In come the titular Boys, lead by Billy Butcher and on the case of confronting these celebrity supes and kicking some sense into them - brutally and fatally if needed.

The three historic key issues selected for this campaign all mark an important development in the story and history of the series. The Boys #1 is of course the premiere issue and the first appearance of Billy Butcher, "Wee" Hughie Campbell, A-Train, and even Billy's dog Terror. Then the third issue marks another onslaught of firsts. The Seven debut, with members Starlight, Homelander, Queen Maeve, and Black Noir making their debuts. When the series was originally published in 2006, it got everyone's attention and plenty of controversy. Following an amicable move from Wildstorm to Dynamite, #7 kicked off the series under its new banner and the second story arc. The cover also calls ...

We've got not one, but TWO sweet stretch goals to announce for fans! If you haven't grabbed Lucio Parrillo's latest beautiful exclusive Red Sonja variant cover on Indiegogo, join the party and invite your friends!

One special part of this new limited edition comics beyond the jaw-dropping cover is the actual story inside! To commemorate Lucio's long association with Dynamite and Red Sonja, as well as the publisher's 15th anniversary, the issue will be a representation of the original Red Sonja #1 from 2005! The comic that kicked off a long legacy of fan-favorite and critically acclaimed Sonja sagas from us. Written by Mike Carey (Lucifer, X-Men Legacy) and Michael Avon Oeming (Powers) and with interior art by Hyrkanian legend Mel Rubi, it's the perfect encapsulation of history and top comic book storytelling to match the new cover.

When Lucio's campaign reaches the very close $12,000 mark, we'll be sending all backers a digital version of that aforementioned issue when the campaign ends!

But that's not it! Then when the campaign jumps up to $15,000, we'll be sending out digital copies of the entire first arc of #1-6 so you can read the whole story! Check out some of these awesome pages from artist Mel Rubi.

Dynamite announces the apocalypse, at least in comic books, with this October's zombie-infested DIE!NAMITE!

Uniting all of Dynamite's hit characters like never before, DIE!NAMITE crosses through time and space with a deadly zombie infection. While Peter Cannon and Tabu fight nefarious criminals and Vampirella flies through space on a Drakulonian ship, each discovers a brewing dark mystery. Soon, these heroes, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, Project Superpowers, and more will collide and come together to battle the biggest threat any of them have ever faced. And they aren't guaranteed to survive the ordeal, in general, or specifically with certain limbs!

Written by two-way threat Declan Shalvey (Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan, Moon Knight) and zombie expert Fred Van Lente (Marvel Zombies, Incredible Hercules) and drawn by newcomer sensations Vincenzo Carratu (Lady Zorro) and Justin Mason (Vengeance of Vampirella), the series will be stuffed with kinetic and gruesome action. Dynamite faithful may be familiar with Justin already from special sequences starring the grisly Vampirella villain Hemorrhage, and that same bloody energy is being brought to this series from the whole creative team. Colorist Kike J. Diaz (Army of Darkness) brings a diverse palette and buckets of blood to the page.

"This project is just fun, fun, fun," said writer Declan Shalvey. "Getting to play with these icons - and in some cases, ripping them apart - is not quite the entertainment I was expecting to have this year. Pulp gets pulped in the R-rated Hollywood blockbuster of the Dynamite universe."

"I'm excited to come on board as part of this DIE!NAMITE team. I always look forward to returning to the zombie realm," said writer Fred Van Lente. "In addition to the masked undead, we're also going to all sorts of new worlds ...

Dynamite announces today that all comic titles through August 31 Final Order Cutoff and September 23 on-sale are fully returnable by retailers.

The current climate that impacts many retailers and businesses at this time has persisted, and Dynamite is recommitting to their efforts in assisting partners through it. This extends a policy that has been active since March and is the second such extension. Dynamite has been overwhelmed by the positive support from retailers even in this difficult period, with double-digit order increases at FOC and higher sell-through rates at Diamond.

Direct market retailers are integral to the health of the comics market and medium and Dynamite stands with these hardworking advocates of everyone's favorite art form, creators, characters and stories. In this era, the comic book store and its wares are ultimately also the nexus by which so much of the rest of popular entertainment revolves or takes cues from. This announcement joins another today noting the continued discounts offered to retailers on perennial products and more by Dynamite, an effort that is also continuing from a string of sales all through this year.

"Retailers are incredibly important to us. Neither of us can do our jobs and survive without the other," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "We instituted this returnable program and others, then we extended it, and now we're extending it again. Though some may laugh at that, we're always trying to be optimistic that everyone will be fully pulled out of this pandemic sooner than later. But we are always ready to adjust accordingly and continue our support for our partners so we can continue thriving under these conditions."

Dynamite announces an extensive slate of sales for retailer partners on graphic novels and more this coming season in October and November, right before the holidays.

Across nearly the entire line, graphic novels, statues, trading cards and other items will be discounted significantly for retailers to get prepared for the holiday season. Titles included will feature fan-favorite stories from acclaimed creators on Vampirella, Red Sonja, The Boys, John Wick, Elvira and much more. Fans can expect to see some of these exciting goodies at their local comic shops to grab themselves or for a loved one. More details will be shared with retailers soon.

"Retailers are the lifeblood of this industry and 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "During the shutdown early into the pandemic and continuing, we offered several sales across all our product categories and properties. Retailers were able to order our perennial graphic novels at incredible discounts, and our marketing team assisted them with the hooks and stories attached to the product to result in sales while most stories had to experiment with curbside pickup and mail-order options. As the crucial holiday season approaches, still with some uncertainty in some areas, we're re-upping our efforts in this area."
