“Finding Dory” is swimming toward its third straight victory at the U.S. box office during the four-day holiday weekend with $50 million-plus, topping “The Purge: Election Year,” “The BFG” and “The Legend of Tarzan,” early estimates showed Friday. The third “Purge” film and “Tarzan” are battling for the second slot with preliminary forecasts for both in a wide range between $30 million and $37 million, while “The BFG” is heading for a disappointing $25 million. Friday estimates showed that the opening day of Universal-Blumhouse’s “The Purge: Election Year” would earn between $12 million to $14 million — with “Dory” taking in about the same amount on its 15th day of of release. By the end of business on Monday, “Dory” will finish the weekend with more than $380 million domestically in 18 days, trailing only “Captain America: Civil War” among 2016 titles. “The Purge” sequel, playing at 2,796 sites, is going to be another money-maker for Universal with a price tag of only $10 million. The original “The Purge” grossed $64 million in the U.S. in 2013 and “The Purge: Anarchy” reeled in $72 million the following year. The films take place in a future America in which all crime, including murder, is legal for one night a year. “The Purge: Election Year” stars Elizabeth Mitchell as a presidential candidate whose platform includes eliminating The Purge. Frank Grillo returns as anti-Purge bodyguard. Warner Bros.’ “Tarzan” generated early Friday estimates ranging from $9 million to $12 million at 3,561 sites. The latest version of the Edgar Rice Burroughs story, starring Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie, may match forecasts, which had called for about $35 million over the four days. The pic, co-produced with Village Roadshow, carries a hefty $180 million budget and will require strong performances overseas in order to make it into the black. Warner Bros. is opening “The Legend of Tarzan” in 19 international markets this weekend, including South Korea and Russia. Reviews have been largely negative with a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “The BFG” is also underperforming forecasts, which had projected an opening in the $30 million range. Friday’s debut day looked likely to hit between $6 million and $8 million. The Roald Dahl adaptation has received plenty of affection from critics with a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to Mark Rylance’s motion-capture work as a giant who befriends an orphan girl. But “The BFG” will likely struggle to break even, given its high-priced $140 million budget, funded by Amblin Partners, Disney and Walden Media. Fox’s second weekend of “Independence Day: Resurgence” looks likely to finish in fifth with about $20 million this weekend, following its $41 million launch. The tentpole was the latest in a long line of sequels that have delivered less than stellar results this summer, including “Alice Through the Looking Glass” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.”

Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine — which released on digital platforms October 1st — snikt'd the record for the best first-day seller of 2024 on Fandango at Home. Fandango's video-on-demand streaming service (formerly Vudu) announced Tuesday that the R-rated MCU movie, which teams Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine for the first time, topped the day-one sales of the other most-watched movies on the service, including the animated Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4, the Blake Lively-starring romantic drama It Ends With Us, and summer blockbusters Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Twisters. The Marvel Studios movie shattered box office records when it hit theaters over the summer, including passing 2019's Joker as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever and scoring the biggest global opening ($439 million) since Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. To date, Deadpool & Wolverine has taken in $1.32 billion, which is the second-best box office performance of the year (behind Disney-Pixar's Inside Out 2) and only the second movie this year to cross the billion dollar mark. The day has finally arrived! STORM #1, one of the most anticipated comic launches of the year, hit stands today! In the new ongoing series, acclaimed writer Murewa Ayodele and superstar artist Lucas Werneck take STORM to new heights as a solo super hero. See why Ororo Munroe is Earth’s Mightiest Mutant in an all-new STORM #1 launch trailer, featuring never-before-seen artwork from the debut issue. The epic trailer gives fans a whirlwind look at Storm’s new status quo from her stunning new costume to the Sanctuary, her new base of operations in Atlanta. “Rugrats” is returning to the big screen. Paramount is developing a live-action/ CG hybrid feature film that’s based on the beloved ’90s animated children’s TV show. Tommy Pickles and his pals Chuckie Finster and Phil and Lil DeVille will be animated in the movie, which is set in the real world à la “Sonic the Hedgehog.” It’s unclear who from the original series — the foursome is orbited by bully Angelica Pickles (and her doll Cynthia, who’s a really cool dancer), Tommy’s baby brother Dil Pickles, dog Spike, as well as their parents Didi and Stu Pickles, Chas Finster, Drew and Charlotte Pickles and Betty and Howard DeVille — will appear in the upcoming film. Jason Moore, whose credits include “Pitch Perfect” and the Tina Fey-Amy Poeheler comedy “Sisters,” is directing the film. “Saturday Night Live” actor Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidell penned the script. Karen Rosenfelt is producing, along with “Rugrats” co-creators Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó. (via Variety)

Fans of the Scream franchise have no reason to be scared — the seventh installment is officially on Paramount’s release calendar. Returning franchise star Neve Cambpell and director Kevin Williamson announced Tuesday on social media that Scream VII will hit theaters on Feb. 27, 2026. Campbell all but rescued the revived franchise from extinction earlier this year when announcing she would return to the world of Scream after sitting out Scream VI over a salary dispute with producer Spyglass. When announcing the news, Campbell revealed that in addition to her return, franchise godfather Williamson would direct. Williamson is the creator of the franchise, penning the script to Wes Craven’s 1996 original, as well as Scream 2 and Scream 4. Guy Busick, who wrote 2022’s Scream and Scream VI, will take over writing duties from James Vanderbilt, who is busy directing the feature Nuremberg. (via The Hollywood Reporter)

DC Studios is getting together the Dynamic Duo — just not the one you might expect. Ahead of the debut of DC’s animated Max series “Creature Commandos,” the studio is mounting its first animated feature project, “Dynamic Duo,” with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. But rather than focus on Batman and Robin, the film will serve as an origin story for Robin and Robin — a.k.a. Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Matthew Aldrich (“Coco,” “Lightyear”) is writing the film, which will be produced by Matt Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho — but the story will be separate from Reeves’ ongoing Gotham-verse with “The Batman” and “The Penguin.” Instead, it will depict how the friendship between Grayson and Todd as youths becomes tested by their diverging ideas for what their future should be. (Reports that the characters will begin as a pair of thieves in the film were false.) In the DC comics, after their respective stints as Batman’s sidekick, Robin, Dick becomes the superhero Nightwing, while Jason transforms into the violent vigilante Red Hood. “Dynamic Duo” represents the first new project from DC Studios since James Gunn and Peter Safran first presented their slate of film and TV projects in early 2023.
