Writer Matt Wagner discusses The Spirit #1, on sale now!

BYRON BREWER: First, Matt, what does it mean to you as a writer to be a part of returning this iconic character to the printed page for Dynamite?

MATT WAGNER: I’ve been a fan of Will Eisner and The Spiritsince I was in my early teens. I first discovered the character and his unique adventures via the over-sized B&W reprints of the early 1970s and I was blown away by the artistry of a true story-teller at the absolute peak of his powers and career. I never thought I’d ever contribute anything of my own to that legacy and, in fact, whenDynamite first approached me about this gig, my first response was to say “No.” I didn’t feel I could add anything to the already fantastic body of work that Eisner had created over the years. But…Dynamite publisher Nick Barrucci and Editor-in-Chief Joe Rybandt were very persistent—“We think you’re perfect for this!” In the end, I came up with an approach and storyline that I feel adds something new to the existing canon of Spirit material. I’m thrilled and honored to be on board for this 12-issue arc.

BB: Tell us your perspective: Who is The Spirit?

MW: Well, initially at least, I go about examining that question and his persona via the thoughts, memories and actions of his familiar cast of supporting characters. He’s obviously had a huge effect not only on Central City, his main base of operations, but also those who know and love him.The Spirit himself is a very kinetic character, always on the go and always thrusting himself into the jaws of danger almost without a thought for his own safety. He’s also got a real boyish element to his persona which makes him totally fun to write. And, of course, he’s an absolute magnet for the ladies…most of them from the wrong side of the law.

BB: Can you give us a non-spoilery hint at what your initial storyline involves?

MW: At the start of our tale, The Spirit has been missing in action and presumed dead for nearly two years. He just vanished without a trace and no one has a clue as to what happened to him. As I said earlier, the lead-in to our story focuses on the strip’s supporting cast of characters; Commissioner and Ellen Dolan, Ebony White, Officer Klink and Sammy. All of them have tried their best to move on with their lives in the face of this devastating loss but The Spirit’s presence still looms large in their rear-view mirrors. I don’t want to spoil too much by saying any more but that certainly provides a big mystery to be unraveled.

BB: Is there any extra difficulty in making these pulp characters with built-in fan bases palatable to new readers? How do you achieve that balance?

MW: This set-up gives me the opportunity to re-introduce not only The Spirit’s world and his pals but also a cross-section of the most infamous members of his rogue’s gallery. It is a bit of a balancing act, trying to write for longtime fans as well as new readers but, in the end, I just try to pen the sort of story that I’d want to read myself. If it’s not interesting to me first…I can’t make it interesting to my readers.

BB: How is it working with artist Dan Schkade? Why is he the right artist for The Spirit?

MW: We had quite a lengthy search for the perfect artist on this book. The Spirit stands as a classic example of comics noir and adventure but there was also a huge cartoony element that ran throughout the narrative. We found a lot of talented artists that could handle the former but fell flat in regards to the latter. My son, Brennan Wagner, was always on deck to color this project and he kept pushing me to consider Dan Schkade, who is a friend of his. The funny part is, I’d met Dan several years ago when he’d shown me some of his work at a convention, long before he and my son ever even met!It turned out to be the right choice because Dan brings all this elements I mentioned to the drawing board while still injecting a healthy amount of his own sensibilities to the mix. His work is quite a bit different from the standard mainstream look-du-jour but I think that really makes it stand out. He’s a really enthusiastic collaborator and in fact, since he lives in the same area as I do, we get together once a week to go over his pages in person. He’s super receptive to any guidance I might give him and is really giving this book his all. And his work combined with my son’s coloring is a real match made in heaven. Their styles blend seamlessly and the results are lush and evocative.

Dynamite is debuting its first-ever children's book exclusively on Indiegogo, timed to launch on National Cat Day, chronicling the emotional roller coaster journey of an adorable cat named Cozmo, with proceeds Saved Whiskers Rescue Organization, a 501(c)3 registered non-profit animal welfare organization!

Saved By Whiskers Indiegogo

In Saved by a Whisker, readers of all ages will learn the incredible true story that graced the headlines of USA Today, the New York Post, Boston Herald, NJ.com, and more. Cozmo was like many other cats, with a loving family. As they were readying to move cross-country, he escaped and was tragically left behind by accident, nearly a thousand miles away from everything he knew and loved.

In this new book, writer Kristen Rybandt and artist Ken Haeser will trace the paw-shaped steps Cozmo took to be reunited with his family, with the help of the Saved Whiskers rescue shelter. Beyond its heartfelt story, the book can help parents explain the need for compassion toward animals, and share a sense of participation and accomplishment with their kids in supporting a great cause. A portion of all proceeds will directly impact the lives of animals in need by providing for food, medicine, grooming, and veterinary expenses.

"It was really fun writing a story from a cat’s perspective," said writer Kristen Rybandt. "It’s really exciting to be part of this Indiegogo campaign and I hope everyone loves it as much as we love cats."

Artist Ken Haeser added, "I was honored to be asked to do the illustrations for Dynamite's first children's book. I've had some cat drawing experience, so I jumped at the chance to do ...

Returning Red Sonja artist Jonathan Lau (Red Sonja, Project Superpowers) joins him, along with colorist Andrew Dalhouse and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

"Ever wanted to see what a sword would do to an over-confident superhero..?" said writer Dan Abnett. "You know, now that these projects are both announced, that Sonja and Vampi are going to meet. That’s going to be big. But without getting spoilery, that’s just the start..."

Artist Jonathan Lau added, "I'm very much in the same boat as the readers with regards to the story, I just want to ramp up the action in every issue!"

Sonja's story starts in her world, initially in line with a usual tale of the Hyrkanian hero. When she encounters strangers with otherworldly appearances, she assumes they are said enemies.

From said strangers' perspective, they are members of The Project led by Captain Future, on a first contact and surveying mission for this version of Earth. Can they find a local metahuman who can be ...

Red Sonja swings into her new limited series, The Price of Blood, by Luke Lieberman and Walter Geovani this December.

Red Sonja caretaker Luke Lieberman returns to the fiery-haired heroine for another chapter in her early adventures. He's joined by fan-favorite Sonja artist Walter Geovani (Death-Defying 'Devil, Clean Room) whose prolific work on the character goes back over a decade, most celebrated being his run with Gail Simone. The blood-soaked colors are handled by Adriano Augusto, while the slashing sound effects are brought by Taylor Esposito.

"Sonja has had a really rough road, and it has made her very jaded, so she is searching for the brighter side of life. That is why she is so angry when this moment of happiness and innocence is stolen from her in this series," said writer Luke Lieberman. "The goal with Sonja, as with any good storytelling is to do something different than everything that has come before while staying true to her roots. That is always the balance - between honoring to the history and being open to the future."

"It´s great to be back! I'm always happy and honored to draw such an iconic character," said artist Walter Geovani. "Sonja is a badass, cutting heads off, but she also has an emotional side."

This new series takes place in the months following Lieberman's last saga, Birth of the She-Devil [in paperback now], but can be read completely standalone like any great pulpy sword and sorcery tale. After the brutal events of that story, Sonja is looking to cut loose and drown out all the atrocities she has witnessed with ale. She travels to Aquilonia to attend the Festival of Fire with her new friend Elli.

Though Sonja's escape is destined to be ...

Dynamite announces a pair of stunning exclusive variant covers featuring Red Sonja and Vampirella by powerhouse duo Jim Balent and Holly Golightly, available right now on Indiegogo!

"I’m a huge fan of Frank Thorne’s work, especially on the Red Sonja Series!," said Jim Balent. "Although I will never surpass his depiction of this She-Devil With a Sword, I could not pass up this opportunity to illustrate one of my favorite covers he created. I consider this a huge honor to have my cover on his iconic issue."

"Lush and glamorous, romantic, goth and melodramatic... as a teen, all of these qualities pulled me into Vampirella’s world," said Holly Golightly. "I wanted to be her best friend and join her in all her adventures. It’s a dream come true to share my passion for her and Jose Gonzalez’s art through my cover with other Vampi fans!“

This is actually a very special project for both Balent and Golightly, who have long been fans of these iconic characters and that influence is seen in their styles and work to this day.

Holly was such a big fan of Vampirella, and particularly the sensual stylings of her definitive 1970s artist Jose Gonzalez, that she used an image of the Drakulonian for her high school graduation yearbook page! As she navigated growing up and honing her artistry, Holly identified with the outsider nature of Vampi and the macabre horror of those original stories. Her favorite issue was the 1972 Annual, which featured a deep roster of top artists across 64 pages like Gonzalez, Wally Wood, Jeffrey Catherine Jones, Neal Adams, and more. Which is why her exclusive new art is adorning a limited-edition printing of that issue and at magazine size!

On the other ...

Dynamite is proud to present the kick off for Year Two of Christopher Priest’s instant classic run on Vampirella, starting a new story arc with issue #16!

Flowing like the blood rivers of Drakulon from the first epic arc “Seduction of the Innocent” and interweaving with “Numerology” over in companion title Sacred Six, Priest takes Vampi back to her roots with “Interstellar.” With #15 sandwiched in between as a spotlight done-in-one tale and great jumping-on point.

Those familiar with the Daughter of Drakulon’s origin know it shares elements with some other luminaries of her native medium. From the confused man accidentally landing on the “shores” of her native land, to her undercover alien immigrant status on Earth. Now with her infamous mother, Lilith, vanished under mysterious circumstances, Ella must return to her home planet to rescue her – maybe. To do so, she must retrace her steps back to her beginning, find that man, and recreate the accident that brought him to Drakulon. And what she finds there is a tribunal against Lilith for the ravaging drought, social unrest, and economic disaster left in her wake. While they turn their eyes to the plentiful “cattle” on Earth full of life-sustaining blood…

“The overwhelming reception to our 50th-anniversary launch prompted Dynamite to expand our take on America’s favorite space vampire,” said writer Christopher Priest. “Shifting some story into our new Sacred Six title, clearing the way for a return to the character’s science fiction roots here as we journey beyond our domestic settings into the weird and horrific planet flowing with rivers of blood. How will Vampirella star in two books at one time? We’ve got that covered. Trust me!”

Priest is again joined by series ...
