Vida the Vet

Spin Master Entertainment, the production company behind children’s franchises “Paw Patrol” and “Bakugan,” has a new character coming to the party.

Variety reports the launch of “Vida the Vet,” which follows a preteen as she cares for a community of animals. The animated series will premiere in the fall of 2023 on BBC’s CBeebies and BBC iPlayer in the U.K., as well as Corus Entertainment’s Treehouse and StackTV in Canada. Other international broadcasting partners, including a distributor in the U.S., will be announced at a later date.

Vida, who is 10 years old, spends her days tending to the woodland creatures that live outside her home, from a fox with a sprained paw to a turtle with an itchy toe to a tiger with an aching tooth.

“We started from wanting to mirror to preschoolers the idea of nurture,” says Jennifer Dodge, the company’s president of entertainmen. “What wellness looks like, being able to model good self care and good care of others — and at the same time, alleviating fears a small child may have about their own visits to the doctor or dentist.”

“Vida the Vet” Season 1 will consist of 52 11-minute episodes, and “Vida the Vet” toys will debut in 2024.

To celebrate the 4th of July, Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie shared a new image of himself in a variation of the costume he wore in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), the original Cap, retired at the end of Avengers: Endgame and offered the shield to his friend Sam Wilson (Mackie). Sam was reluctant about taking on the mantle which played out in the television series with Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and now Mackie is leading up the fourth film in the franchise, but one that seems to be paired with another franchise, the Incredible Hulk from 2008. The new film includes General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross who was originally played by William Hurt, but after his passing the studio brought in Harrison Ford. We’ll also see the return of Liv Tyler as Betty Ross and Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns aka The Leader. Ross had already appeared in Civil War and Black Widow and another member of the Hulk cast, Tom Roth, returned as Emil Blonsky aka the Abomination in both Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The only major cast member from the film who hasn’t returned, not counting Ed Norton who was replaced by Mark Ruffalo, would be Ty Burrell who played Leonard Sampson aka Doc Sampson from the comics. So this film has a lot to do, establish Sam as Captain America for the movie going audience and reincorporate the rest of the Hulk cast all while making a film with Harrison Ford and Giancarlo Esposito in it… no pressure on Mackie at all.  Captain America

A report circulating around the entertainment websites is saying that the planned Arkham Asylum series that was in the works from the Staircase creator Antonio Campos is no longer moving forward at Max… for now. This was a very confusing project as it was supposed to be something the previous regime at DC agreed to and was going to be produced by The Batman writer/director Matt Reeves. But later word came when James Gunn and Peter Safran came on board and said that the series would be part of the main DCU that the pair were developing with the upcoming Superman movie and not part of Reeves’ Batman offshoot. Gunn said this series was one of the first things they greenlit upon signing on. It seemed odd to have Reeves create something related to Batman yet outside of his take on the Caped Crusader. The fact that multiple sites have confirmed that its not moving forward but with the “yet” caveat tells me that we’ll probably here more about the project in the near future.  Arkham Asylum

Casting director Francine Maisler was featured at a panel at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic recently and fascinated the audience for 90 minutes with stories of her illustrious career and the legions of actors she’s worked with the last three decades. One of the actors which really stood out to her was Lady Gaga who will be appearing in Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie À Deux, which is rumored to make its debut at the Venice Film Festival. “She’s so good in it, you guys,” said Maisler. “She’s going to blow your mind. I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was Todd Phillips, before me. But I will tell you, she’s really surprising — and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised. I mean, we all knew what she could do in A Star is Born, but I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’ Something she could do and just be real. But this… Man, she’s good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real — and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is — shows she’s good.” Joker: Folie À Deux will be released in theaters in October 2024.Lady Gaga

Fireworks, barbecues and Gru. That’s how many Americans celebrated the Fourth of July, as “Despicable Me 4” topped the box office, earning a commanding $20.4 million. The film, the latest entry in Universal and Illumination’s wildly successful franchise about a domesticated former supervillain, has earned $47.6 million in its first two days of release. It is projected to gross roughly $120 million over the five-day holiday — an impressive result for a production that carries a relatively economical (for an animated movie) $100 million budget. In contrast, many films by Disney and Pixar, Illumination’s main rivals, routinely cost $200 million to produce. “Despicable Me 4” brings back Steve Carell as Gru and pits him against his former “Anchorman” co-star Will Ferrell, who plays a French foil named Maxime Le Mal, and Sofia Vergara as Valentina, a femme fatale and Maxime’s main squeeze. But it’s the Minions (voiced by Pierre Coffin, a filmmaker who has overseen past “Despicable Me” movies), those highlighter-yellow, manic critters that have delighted kids for over a decade, that are the series’ superpower. Not only do they pop up in the “Despicable Me” films, they’ve also anchored spinoff adventures and become Illumination’s mascots in the process. (via Variety)

Jeremy Renner stars in 'Mayor of Kingstown'

Stephen King spent the 4th of July holiday catching up on TV shows, taking to social media to express his thoughts on Mayor of Kingstown and Jeremy Renner. Mayor of Kingstown is a Paramount+ crime thriller created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, which stars Renner, who portrayed Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I have no f***ing clue what’s going on in THE MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN, but I love this show,” King posted on X. “It reminds me of THE SHIELD and SONS OF ANARCHY. I had no f***ing idea what was going on in those, either.” Renner stars as Mike McLusky, the “Mayor” of the Michigan town where the McLusky family serves as mediators between gangs, prisoners and cops. King praised Renner for starring in Season 3 of the series after his snowplow accident at the beginning of 2023. “... Jeremy Renner is a badass who got run over by a snowplow and came back for Season F***ing Three!” King shared. (via Deadline)

Image Comics is pleased to reveal a sneak peek of the shenanigans to come in this month’s issue of Grommets by The New York Times bestselling writer Rick Remender (Napalm Lullaby, Deadly Class, LOW), fan-favorite comedian and writer Brian Posehn (Rifters, Deadpool, The Mandalorian, Scotch McTiernan: Holiday Party), artistic powerhouse Brett Parson (Tank Girl), and colorist extraordinaire Moreno Dinisio (Black Science). In Grommets #3, a house party plan is hatched on a ditch day at the arcade when Rick and Brian take their shot at the girl of their dreams. Grommets takes readers on the '80s-infused journey of a young Rick who starts a new school and tries desperately to find his place amongst the cliques of foul-mouthed high schoolers of the Sacramento suburbs. Skateboarding provides him with an opportunity to make some 'cool' new friends—but he soon finds out that they may not be as 'cool' as he (or they!) first thought. "When you take a swing at a strange and personal story it's always wonderful when it finds such a passionate audience," said Remender in response to the series' buzz. "We are all so grateful for everyone's support." Perfect for fans of Freaks & Geeks and Dazed and Confused, Grommets is at once an authentic look at punk rock and skater culture and a snapshot of the generation that turned skating into a worldwide phenomenon. It's a heartfelt story that follows two friends from troubled homes as they navigate their damage in an era when no one cared. Grommets #1, second printing and Grommets #2 are available at comic book shops now.
