Nancy Collins, writer of Red Sonja: Vultures Circle #5, talks with writer Mark Waidabout Justice Inc.: The Avenger #1, both on sale June 3rd!

NANCY COLLINS: Justice Inc: The Avenger #1 appears to open at the climax of an on-going story. Is this series a spin-off?

MARK WAID: Nope! All-new! I just wanted to get all the characters on stage as soon as possible and introduce them and their personalities and gimmicks -- The Avenger and his aides -- through action rather than talky-talk.Ronilson pulled it off with flair!

NC: How closely do you work with your artist, Ronilson Freire?

MW: Due to time zone and language barriers, we communicate only electronically, but I’ve told him I’m a fan -- and that he’s more than welcome to adapt/tweak/fuss with my art direction as much as he’d like if he has a better idea with which to frame a story beat!

NC: The Avenger’s pedigree dates back to the glory days of the Pulp Era. Does he actually have special abilities (I won’t call them superpowers) like the Shadow, or is he more along the line of Doc Savage—a man of iron will and infinite wealth out to fight crime?

MW: He has one special ability: the skin of his face is dead and lifeless and can be molded like putty. This makes Benson a true master of disguise. With the aid of a make-up kit and colored contact lenses, he can become whoever he wishes to become as a matter of espionage.

NC: Were you a fan of the original Avenger pulp stories before you took on the writing chores for the comic book?

MW: I was a gargantuan fan of the pulp stories. I read my first one, a paperback reissue, in the mid-1970s and was riveted immediately. Being able to write the Avenger brings that full-circle and is a joy.

NC: Can you tell us who the various members of The Avenger’s entourage are and why they are so devoted to him?

MW: For various individual reasons, they all have a preternatural zeal for justice -- some because they were framed for crimes they didn’t commit, some because they’ve endured hellish personal losses. But each of the Justice Inc. crew brings something to the table that Benson himself can’t duplicate, be it sheer brute strength or chemical wizardry or foreign language skills.

NC: What can readers look forward to in the series?

MW: The adventures of a hero who swears he doesn’t have a death wish and yet seems to leap headlong into traps he knows full well are deathtraps. Why is that? What makes a man like that tick? Come find out!

Two years ago, legendary comic artist Tim Sale passed away at the way too young age of 66. One of the things he was best known for was his collaborations with writer Jeph Loeb on books like Batman: The Long Halloween and Spider-Man: Blue. Today at a Diamond UK retailer event, Loeb along with artist Klaus Janson announced that they, along with other friends of Sale’s, would be creating a final chapter for the Long Halloween arc starting in September of this year. It will start with a reprint of the 2021 Long Halloween Special, which had been planned as a lead into this story and it will be presented as a zero issue for the series. Some of the artists taking turns on this series will include Eduardo Risso, Janson and Mark Chiarello with more to be announced. Each issue will have a main cover featuring previously unseen Batman art by Sale appropriate for each issue. There will also be mugshot variants featuring various members of Gotham’s rogue gallery. This will wrap up the story that started with Batman: The Long Halloween and included Batman: Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome.Last Halloween

How big has True Crime gotten? Besides been a very popular genre on television and podcasts, and being the catalyst that brings the lead actors together on the hit series, Only Murders in the Building… the genre is big enough to have it’s own convention. CrimeCon is taking place May 31st to June 2nd in Nashville and the event has just made a deal that will have a slate of sessions from the convention aired on SiriusXM. Sixteen key sessions are set to air on June 8th and 9th on the Triumph channel, these will include CSI creator Anthony Zuiker, America’s Most Wanted’s John Walsh, Chris Hansen, Nancy Grace, and Ann Burgess, the subject of Mastermind: To Think Like a Killer. You have to wonder why SiriusXM doesn’t have a similar deal with the San Diego ComicCon.True Crime

In an excerpt from Tom Shone’s book, The Nolan Variations, director Christopher Nolan talked about his reluctance to make The Dark Night Rises: “There are no good third sequels, basically, Rocky III maybe. But they are very difficult. So, my instinct was to change genres. The first one was an origin story. The second one is a crime drama very much like Heat, and the third one, we needed to blow up bigger, because you can’t scale down. The audience doesn’t give you any choice, but nor can you go back and do what you did before. So, you’ve got to shift genres. We went for the historical epic, the disaster film, the Towering Inferno meets Doctor Zhivago.” Nolan’s gamble seems to have paid off with a film that got an 87% critic score, a 90% audience score, and over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.Dark Knight Rises

Knives Out 3 has a title: Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. “The next Benoit Blanc mystery, the follow-up to Knives Out and Glass Onion, is called Wake Up Dead Man,” writer/director Rian Johnson revealed on X Friday. A 45-second video on Johnson’s X page also officially confirmed Daniel Craig will reprise his role as Benoit Blanc in the movie that is set to debut on Netflix next year. The streaming giant on its Tudum site also said Craig will return as Blanc to solve a new murder mystery. Johnson will write and direct the second sequel to his 2019 film, a surprise box office and critical smash whodunit for Lionsgate that earned him an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. “I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There’s a whole tonal spectrum from Carr to Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies,” the director posted. (via THR)

Despite more movies in the marketplace, we’re still feeling the aftermath of the strikes. How is that? Many aren’t in the habit of moviegoing yet, and while content is king, neither of this weekend’s releases are expected to create a stampede: one is a prequel/spinoff with a new actress to a beloved Oscar winning cult movie, and the other is a family movie of an age-old comic-strip cat who eats lasagna. Don’t expect a $200M+ four-day weekend like the last two Memorial Day holiday frames have delivered.Warner Bros’ George Miller prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga did $3.5M at 3,400 locations that began previews yesterday at 3PM.Meanwhile, Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie posted $1.9M in shows that started at 2PM yesterday at 3,243 locations. That’s a tad higher than IF’s previews last Thursday of $1.75M. Garfield is expected to do $30M+ over four days. Garfield is 37% Rotten with RT critics. General audiences numbered 58%, parents 19% and kids under 12 were 23%. General audience gave the animated pic 3 1/2 stars while parents and kids awarded it 4 1/2 stars. Overall, women outnumber men for Garfield at 55% to 45%. (via Deadline) For more, click here

In the wake of Darkest Hour, DC superstar Sam Humphries (Green Lanterns, Harley Quinn) and acclaimed artist team Brandt&Stein (Crowded) set the stage for a brand-new one-shot adventure featuring a truly outrageous new team. BOOM! Studios, together with leading toy and game company Hasbro, present POWER RANGERS INFINITY! Diehard Rangers fangirl Lola somehow finds herself mixed up in a marvelous mess of multiversal madness! Lola, along with a ragtag team of off-kilter Rangers from across the Grid–dubbed “Infinity Force”–must come together to face off against the mildly dangerous D-list villainess Poisandra who has managed to snake her way across the fragile multiverse. “Fans are already saying that out of all the Power Rangers comic books that reference hockey goalies AND Jane Austen, Power Rangers Infinity is the greatest of all time,” said writer Sam Humphries. “I’m truly honored, and I absolutely couldn't have done it without Ted and Ro. Not only is their art hilarious and heartbreaking, but they never once said it shouldn’t be done. Not one time!” “It was an honour to be asked to contribute to the Power Rangers mythos, but Sam’s story made it a delight,” said artist team Brandt&Stein. “A story of triumph and the washed-up dregs of aborted teams and more heart than it could reasonably lay claim to? Now give us that Peggy spinoff!” This epic, oversized issue will feature a main cover by Paulina Ganucheau, along with variant covers by Brandt&Stein, Goñi Montes, and Sweeney Boo! Todd McFarlane Productions proudly unveils its latest addition to the Spawn Universe with a highly anticipated series, Violator: Origin. Written by Eisner Award winning writer Marc Andreyko and featuring an incredible lineup of artists—including Piotr Kowalski, Kyle Hotz, Jonathan Wayshak, Gianenrico Bonacorsi, Cully Hamner, and Von Randall—this six-issue saga will reveal the mythos behind one of the most popular figures in the Spawn Universe. In Violator: Origin, readers will embark on a fantastic journey through time, revealing the long-awaited origin of the Violator. The story is narrated by the devious storyteller, Violator, himself. It begins with his celestial inception to his catastrophic decent into the fiery depths of hell, and ultimately his banishment to the mortal realm of earth. The story will run throughout earth’s history, as Violator lurks in the shadows, manipulating the course of events and ensnaring some of the most influential figures to ever walk the earth. With six extra-length issues, and six talented artists—each artist doing a different chapter to the series—readers will be transported through six distinct eras. Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn and President of Image Comics, said: “Strangely, that in the 30 year history of the Spawn-Universe, we have never written the origin story of one of the main characters of this mythology. So now, after such a long wait, Marc Andreyko and his crew of artists have delivered a story that is a multi-era spanning telling of how this villain came to be Spawn’s main antagonist. Since his first appearance way back in 1992, I’ve been asking writers to think about doing this story. Luckily Marc has enthusiastically jumped on that request.” Violator: Origin invites readers on a thrilling journey through the depths of the Spawn Universe with captivating narrative and stunning artwork.

Violator: Origin #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, August 14 (the Final Order Cutoff deadline for retailers is Monday, July 8):

Cover A by Piotr Kowalski - Lunar Code 0624IM246
