 Dynamite announces a brand new chapter in the tapestry of the fantasy masterpiece Fire and Ice, coming this August!
Originally released in theaters in 1983, Fire and Ice has since become a beloved fantasy tale and a milestone in adult animation. The result of one of the greatest collaborations between creative superstars, Fire and Ice teamed up legendary animation director Ralph Bakshi ( Fritz the Cat, The Lord of the Rings, Wizards), the "Godfather" of fantasy artwork, Frank Frazetta, along with screenwriters Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway. Now, just in time for the 40th anniversary, key players are returning alongside new talents to add an essential prequel to the story in comics!
Before the fire waned and the ice spread across the world, before the events of the film, readers will get to meet the memorable central characters once again or for the first time ever. The beautiful princess Teegra and her powerful panther companion have not yet gone through the kidnapping attempt by the evil queen Juliana and her son Nekron. The young warrior Larn's village has not yet been destroyed. And who knows what the mysterious Darkwolf has been up to? Writer Bill Willingham and artist Leonardo Manco will chronicle the lives of these characters in parallel, leading to the genesis of the movie.    With licensing oversight and creative cooperation from both the Frazetta and Bakshi families, fellow fantasy virtuoso Bill Willingham is taking on the task of weaving a brand new story that both provides readers with a compelling standalone tale and slots seamlessly into the chronology of the classic film. Willingham has won the comics industry's prestigious Eisner Award multiple times and is critically acclaimed for his creation of the Fables mythos under DC Comics' Vertigo brand, which has been adapted and spun off into the hit video game series The Wolf Among Us, as well as a crossover with Batman. Willingham has additionally written for the titles Robin and Justice Society of America, as well as his original creations Elementals with Comico and Legenderry with Dynamite. To follow in the footsteps of the timeless visuals of Frazetta and Bakshi, a perfect artistic fit was a must for this title. Leonardo Manco is taking the reins, following his decades of comics work in fantasy, horror, monsters, and more. He has contributed to such titles as Hellblazer, Werewolf by Night, Hellstorm, Sláine, and many others. With the world of Fire and Ice full of monsters, looming evil, heroic action, and other hallmarks of fantasy, Manco's extensive experience makes him a masterful match. Writer Willingham shared, "I discovered both Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi at an early age. My awareness of Frazetta cemented the first time someone put a Conan book into my hands. I discovered Bakshi when almost everyone did, when the film Wizards was released. I was in college at the time and working a number of jobs to be able to afford it. One of those jobs was at a local movie theater. I got to see it about a dozen times, twice a night for a week, and it ignited something profound in me. Now, 50 plus years later, there was a chance to work with these story giants. I wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity to work with these Giants in the Earth."  As with any project involving Frank Frazetta in its DNA, a new crop of top of the line cover artists was also absolutely necessary to channel his fantasy mastery. The first issue features stunning covers by Bill Sienkiewicz ( New Mutants, Elektra), Joseph Michael Linsner ( Dawn, Wolverine), Mahmud Asrar ( Conan the Barbarian, Batman vs. Robin), Francesco Francavilla ( Zorro, Captain America), interior artist Leonardo Manco, and a special presentation of Frazetta's original painting for the film's poster. The upcoming film, The Killer’s Game, includes a reunion of two of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff both appear in the new film and the former wrestler turned actor talked with ComicBook.com about the possibility of working with other Guardians actors, possibly over with James Gunn at DC Studios. “I hope so, yeah. That’s kind of my goal. I really want, because I’ve done another project outside of Guardians with Karen Gillan, and I’ve done work with Pom now. I would like to work with Chris [Pratt] and Zoe [Saldana] outside of the Marvel Universe, as well.” Bautista has made it clear that he is open to working with DC as well. “I guess it has to be the right part. Marvel Studios is getting a bit stylish with their newest trailer for Agatha All Along. The quick clip is done in the style of a 60s/70s horror film reminiscent of Night of the Living Dead. They give the same film look and even work in the title pun that were standard for the trailers of that era. And in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Joe Locke who will be playing “Teen” in the series, addressed having to keep the secret of his character… and perhaps why rumors and spoilers are bad. Locke said, “One of the things I love about Marvel is you keep all these secrets that are really frustrating at first, especially when you’re doing things like this [press day]. But the reason you keep them is because if you were to tell them, then it wouldn’t have the same effect when it all comes out. The secrets are secrets for a reason, and Teen’s backstory is an interesting one. If I was able to talk about it now, it would ruin the whole point of the show, and that is what keeps me being able to keep a secret. With The Penguin debuting on September 19th, more and more information about the series has been coming out. Just last week we learned about the titles and episode lengths for the first four episodes and now we get the final four as well. Keep in mind that one of the big complaints about MCU series have been the short episode run times, I don’t think that will be a problem with this show. Episode 1 which picks up right after the events of The Batman will be called After Hours and runs 1 hour 7 minutes. Episode 2, Inside Man runs 56 minutes, episode 3, Bliss, runs 59 minutes and episode 4, Cent’anni runs 58 minutes. For those curious, Cent’anni is an Italian toast that wishes health and happiness for 100 years. Now the new episodes we’ve learned about are Episode 5, Homecoming, which runs 54 minutes, episode 6, Gold Summit, running 52 minutes, episode 7, Top Hat, the shortest episode at 46 minutes and the season finale, Great or Little Thing which clocks in at 1 hour and 8 minutes. And while I could try and read things into each title, the one that jumps out to me is Top Hat, perhaps a nod to the characters comic book design that originally included a tuxedo, top hat and umbrella. The Vision series seems to be heating up as The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Picard actor Todd Stashwick is joining the cast. Stashwick recently played Captain Liam Shaw in the third season of Picard, where he worked with writer Terry Matalas, who will be the showrunner for Vision. It’s all about who you know, right? The series has been rumored since the end of WandaVision and is expected to finally tell viewers what happened to the rebuilt, all-white version of the Vision that we last saw in the season finale after having a philosophical discussion about the Ship of Theseus. Word is that Stashwick will play an assassin who is hunting the Vision for his technology. Paul Bettany will be returning as the titular android while it’s also been reported that James Spader will return as Ultron who we last saw in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Both in the comics and the MCU, Ultron is credited for building the Vision, but in the comics he’s imprinted with the brainwaves of Simon Williams aka Wonder Man while in the films, Tony Stark’s AI Jarvis was uploaded into the Vibranium body. Disney+ is in early development on Phantom, a YA movie reimagination of the classic novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, Deadline is reporting. The project hails from Disney Branded Entertainment and Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants. Phantom is very green at this time but has the potential to become a franchise similar to The Descendants if it moves forward. This marks Ortega’s return to Disney following the conclusion of his deal with Netflix. He will direct and executive produce Phantom under his production banner The KO Company. Things are getting hairy for Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner in the first teaser trailer for Wolf Man. Universal Pictures is set to release director Leigh Whannell‘s horror feature in theaters Jan. 17, 2025. The film is a reimagining of the classic monster franchise that launched with 1941’s The Wolf Man. Warner Bros is officially reporting $13M for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. High exit scores from fans last night at 4 1/2 stars on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak and 5 stars from both parents and kids under 12. Currently, the projection for the sequel is $90M — with potential for upside. Females made a date with the Michael Keaton-Jenna Ortega-Winona Ryder sequel at 59% with 73% being over 25. Girls also outnumbered boys, 62% to 38% among the kids. A very strong turnout by Latino and Hispanic moviegoers last night at 36%. RelishMix says that the social media reach for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is 41% ahead of action comedy sci-fi genre norms with 508.6M followers across TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube and Instagram combined. After more than 35 years, Tim Burton finally found the secret ingredient needed to bring Beetlejuice back to life once again. While promoting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which premieres Sept. 6 in theaters, returning stars Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara credited Jenna Ortega for helping the director see his long-awaited sequel to fruition after first working together on Netflix‘s Wednesday. Noting that the actress “literally didn’t exist” yet when the original 1988 movie premiered, Keaton said to Burton for USA Today, “She gets born, you end up doing a thing with her. Then you go, wait a minute. Her? It? If she’s not around, we may never make this thing.” Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sees Lydia return home with her daughter Astrid (Ortega) and boyfriend Rory (Justin Theroux) following the death of her father Charles (played in the original by Jeffrey Jones). The funeral reunites Lydia with her stepmother Delia (O’Hara reprising her role) as Beetlejuice returns to wreak havoc once again. (via Deadline) |
