Captain America Hydra

Yesterday’s release of Marvel’s Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 sent shockwaves through fandom. Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz’s story implies that Steve Rogers is secretly a Hydra agent, and may have been recruited into the terrorist organization as a child. Fans were distressed at what this could mean for the iconic and patriotic Avenger’s past, present, and future.

Word of Captain America’s dark turn seems to have reached Chris Evans, the actor who plays the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Steve Rogers. Evans responded to the news with a simple tweet reading, “Hydra?!?!? #sayitaintso.”

Evans has played through a somewhat similar scenario on screen. InCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, it was revealed that the entire S.H.I.E.L.D. organization had been compromised by Hydra up through its highest ranks, and had in fact been under Hydra’s thumb since its earliest days. In that story, Captain America proved to be a singular, incorruptible force that helped root out and remove Hydra’s influence. In the current Marvel Comics Universe, it seems those roles may be reversed.

Prince Charming, the love interest archetype of many a Disney princess, is getting his very own feature film.

“Wonka” filmmaker Paul King, who is also behind the “Paddington” franchise, is directing “Prince Charming” for Disney. King, Simon Barnaby and Jon Croker are co-writing the screenplay, of which plot details have not been confirmed. It’s unclear if the film will be live action or animated.

In classic fairy tales, the Prince Charming character is one who rescues a damsel in distress and sets out to save her from evil forces / stepmothers. See: “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Rapunzel” and basically any other 20th century (the time period, not the former film studio) Disney movie. In those films, however, he’s usually a side character and not the main star. Though Prince Charming was originally the love interest of Cinderella, this project will reportedly not be specifically linked to the curfew-breaking princess. (via Variety)

Just now at New York Comic Con’s Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing Panel, the biggest comics panel of the weekend, Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski, VP & Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, and Fantastic Four writer Ryan North revealed more information on what the future holds for the Marvel Universe next year in ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM.

First teased last year at San Diego Comic-Con, ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM is an overarching status quo shift coming to Marvel Comics, the likes of which haven’t been seen since 2008’s Dark Reign. Spinning out of Blood Hunt where Doctor Doom manipulated Doctor Strange into passing him the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM sees Doom accomplish his ultimate goal at last as he uses his new power to take over the entire world. It’s a shocking and upending turn of events that will impact Marvel’s entire line of comics and see the launch of tie-in series and one-shots, collectively forming an era worthy of comic books’ greatest supervillain!

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM will be anchored by a core title launching in February—RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM. The five-issue event series will written by Ryan North, whose acclaimed current run of Fantastic Four will be heavily impacted by ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM, and drawn by one of the industry’s hottest artists, R.B. Silva, known for his defining work on the X-Men in titles like Powers of X and Rise of the Powers of X. While Doom’s reign will be felt across the Marvel Universe, RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM will take readers behind the mask as they bear witness to the triumphs and trials of Doom’s rule, as well as the foolish attempts to topple it…

Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme - then disappeared behind Latveria's closed borders. For most, there’s enough going on in the world that Doom's absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was... the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World - the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth's leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it's mind control or Doombots, whatever's affecting them hasn't affected Earth's heroes - and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom's machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom?

“ONE WORLD UNDER ROOM is the umbrella, impacting not just THE RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM, but the entire Marvel Universe,” Brevoort explained. “To the Avengers, Spider-Man and more…Doom is going to impact every corner of the universe for 2025.”

“ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM sees Doctor Doom coming out of [Latveria], and overnight, taking over the world,” North said. “Every country is a province of a united Latveria, and everyone answers to Doom, and he is going to make some changes ... He gets to show the world that he’s the greatest at what he does, and that might not be great for people not named Victor Von Doom.”

Check out Ben Harvey’s main cover for THE RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM #1, a promotional piece by Greg Land, and interior artwork. Stay tuned more news about the event in the weeks ahead!

Christin Miloti and Colin Farrell in 'The Penguin'

There are four episodes left to HBO, Max and DC Studios’ The Penguin, and Thursday at New York Comic Con the studios gave attendees a tease as to how events could go for kingpin Oz Cobb — and it’s about to get fierce with rival queenpin Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti.

Colin Farrell’s Oz and Milioti’s Sofia are associates-turned-antagonists, and this trailer shows they’re poised to go war for control of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Sofia has the added motivation of seeking revenge on her former driver, Oz, for murdering her brother Alberto (Michael Zegen).

Fans of The Penguin who filled a conference hall inside Manhattan’s Javits Center on Thursday morning, on the first day of New York Comic Con, saw a panel discussion with six of the show’s stars, including Farrell and Milioti. In addition to the mid-season trailer, they caught a glimpse of two scenes from the series’ upcoming fifth episode, which drops Sunday. Showrunner Lauren LaFranc and makeup designer Mike Marino were also aboard, alongside actors Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar), Michael Kelly (Johnny Viti), Deirdre O’Connell (Francis Cobb) and Clancy Brown (Salvatore Maroni). At New York Comic Con Thursday, Marvel Comics' Next Big Thing Panel saw Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski, writer Chris Condon, and more reveal the next ongoing series coming to Marvel’s hit new Ultimate Universe. Joining acclaimed titles Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Black Panther, Ultimate X-Men, and Ultimates is… ULTIMATE WOLVERINE!

Hitting stands in January, ULTIMATE WOLVERINE will be written by rising star Chris Condon (That Texas Blood, Venom War: Daredevil) and drawn by Moon Knight powerhouse artist Alessandro Cappuccio. True to the character’s origin as a government weapon, Ultimate Wolverine is an unwilling agent of the Maker, the secret creator of this corrupt universe. Mindwiped and used as an assassin, he’s still the best there is as at what he does… even if he’s not in control of who he does it to.

In order to maintain control of their corner of the Maker’s world, three members of his council – Magik, Colossus and Omega Red – deploy their most lethal asset: The Winter Soldier! But WHO is the weapon behind the mask?

=Before ULTIMATE WOLVERINE arrives in January, readers will see him in action for the first time in a prelude story by Condon and Cappuccio in ULTIMATE UNIVERSE: ONE YEAR IN #1, the special one-shot that concludes the first year of Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe and sets up the next year of stories, including the Maker’s long-awaited return!

“When Wil Moss called me and asked me if I wanted to take on this title, I jumped at the chance and immediately had an idea of what to do with it,” said Condon. “I’m bringing my essence of storytelling from That Texas Blood to the Marvel Universe with Wolverine, looking back at what came before and bringing us something new.”

“You might notice that there’s a Red Star on his costume and you might wonder why,” he continued. “If you look at that mask, there’s a muzzle on him and that’s because he’s wild”

Marvel Werewolf By Night FULL Breakdown, Ending Explained, Blade and Moon Knight Easter Eggs - YouTube

Two years after the release of Werewolf by Night on Disney+, director Michael Giacchino has offered an update on a possible sequel’s whereabouts.

Werewolf by Night was the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first full-fledged horror project, introducing audiences to fan-favorite characters from the comics like Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, and the titular Werewolf by Night. While a sequel to Werewolf by Night has been teased since 2022, nothing has been officially announced yet, much to the chagrin of the MCU fandom.

While speaking on X, Giacchino opened up about a potential sequel to Werewolf by Night, explaining, “There’s been a lot going on in the industry and everyone sort of recalibrating. I think certain things had to be just put aside for the moment. We’ll get there.”

Paul Greengrass and Stephen King with King's novel Fairy Tale

A24 has taken on the Stephen King bestseller Fairy Tale.

The dark fantasy will be mounted as a 10-episode series. Paul Greengrass, who wrote a script and expected to direct the feature, is expected to still be in the middle of things. That script will be expanded by Greengrass and J.H. Wyman, who will be the showrunner and whose credits include Fringe, Almost Human and Debris.

Peter Rice will be executive producer alongside Greengrass, Wyman and King. Greengrass will likely be involved as director, reportedly, but his deal is not yet done. The other deals have closed.

Published by Scribner, King’s Fairy Tale follows a 17-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a portal and enters a terrifying world where good and evil are at war. The stakes of both worlds are immense. The magic in the tale is King taking his time to frame out the world of the teen, Charlie Reade, and a kindness he extends that eventually rewards him with a magic sundial that gains him entry into the portal. That leads to the epic battle of good and evil. (via Deadline)

“The Boys” Season 5 has cast Mason Dye in a guest star role, Variety is reporting.

Dye will appear in the role of Bombsight. Exact character details are being kept under wraps, but the character was previously mentioned in Season 4 of “The Boys” as a Supe who starred in the early Vought superhero film “The Curse of Fu Manchu” in the 1950’s.

According to sources, Bombsight could also potentially appear in the upcoming prequel series “Vought Rising” opposite Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash. Reps for Amazon and Sony Pictures Television declined to comment on the “Vought Rising” component of the casting.

“The Boys” is based on the New York Times best-selling comic of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The series was developed by showrunner Eric Kripke.

Powerhouse comic book writer Vita Ayala (New Mutants, Static: Season One) is partnering up with on-the-verge star artist Skylar Patridge (Absolute Power: Ground Zero, Supergirl) for The Horizon Experiment: Finders//Keepers, a brand-new action-adventure comic that twists the genre in a way that’s never been done before. Fans of Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and Tomb Raider will enjoy this thrilling, fresh take that re-envisions this style of storytelling with new energy and perspective. Hitting shelves in January 2025, this marks the final installment in The Horizon Experiment series of one-shots.

The Horizon Experiment centers on original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre or inspired by a famous pop culture character, with each unique comic putting a diverse spin on a fan-favorite story. The initiative is led by Eisner and Harvey Award-winning creator Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian, Infidel) and award-winning editor Will Dennis (SOMNA: A Bedtime Story, Gideon Falls).

The Horizon Experiment: Finders//Keepers is a reverse Indiana Jones story that follows Puerto Rican archeology grad student Ines Guarua, who plans to steal an important cultural artifact from a famous museum in order to bring it back home to where it belongs, in the heart of the rainforest. If she fails, then a curse may bring about the destruction of Puerto Rico. This leads Guarua on a quest to smuggle other artifacts from museums and institutions to return them to their native cultures. Finders//Keepers flips the script on traditional action-adventure tales in a fun and exciting way, opening up a new path for protagonist Guarua for potential future stories.

“I’ve always loved action-adventure stories, but the archetypal protagonist and most of the traditional setups weren’t really ever going to work for people like me,” said Ayala. “Working on The Horizon Experiment, I knew I found a way to open that world up to anyone who wanted a shot of being the hero! What a thrill to get to be on such an amazing team, on one of the most fun projects of my career!"

“Out of all the projects announced as part of The Horizon Experiment, Finders//Keepers has generated the most anticipation, and I'm not surprised,” said Pichetshote. “Nothing has made me want to come back to comics editing more than the prospect of working with Vita Ayala, so I just crossed my fingers and hoped they'd be interested in joining in. Skylar Patridge is a superstar that still manages to grow in exciting directions with every new high-profile project, so I knew their working together was going to be special. They delivered and then some."

Finders//Keepers is a dream project—narratively, artistically, and thematically—and The Horizon Experiment has provided a much-needed stage to tell stories like this,” said Patridge. “It’s rare that a project aligns so perfectly, and working with Vita, Pornsak, and Will to build and shape this world has been both gratifying and deeply inspiring. Add to that the incredible work of colorist Jason Wordie and letterer and designer Becca Carey, and it truly feels like hitting the creative lottery.”

Like the other titles in The Horizon Experiment, this one-shot serves as the equivalent of a pilot for a creator-owned series, with the potential of continuing should there be demand for more. Along with a cover featuring art by Patridge, the issue will feature variant covers by Eisner Award-winning artist Tula Lotay (SOMNA: A Bedtime Story, Barnstormers: A Ballad of Love and Murder), part of a series of connecting variant covers across all five Horizon Experiment one-shots.

The Horizon Experiment series kicked off on September 25 with The Manchurian, written by Pichetshote and illustrated by superstar artists Terry and Rachel Dodson (Adventureman, Harley Quinn), featuring a Chinese super spy inspired by James Bond. Other upcoming issues include the Muslim exorcism horror The Sacred Damned (by Sabir Pirzada and Michael Walsh), East African werewolf horror Moon Dogs (by Tananarive Due and Kelsey Ramsey), and “Evil Dead for blerds” horror-comedy Motherf*ckin’ Monsters (by J. Holtham and Michael Lee Harris). The five issues will be released on a monthly basis.

The Horizon Experiment: Finders//Keepers #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, January 15:

The Horizon Experiment: Finders//Keepers #1 will also be available across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.

Pichetshote will be discussing The Horizon Experiment on the "Image Comics Presents: Breaking Ground" panel at New York Comic Con this Sunday, October 20, from 11:00 a.m–12:00 p.m. EST in Room 406.2. Pichetshote will also be at booth I32 during the event.

View-Master toy

Sony Pictures and Masters of the Universe producer Escape Artists are developing a live-action film based on another Mattel toy line: View-Master, the 3D image reel viewer that was first introduced in 1939.

The logline is under wraps, but the companies on Wednesday in a release called the film a “four-quadrant family adventure film.”

Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Tony Shaw are producing. Kevin McKeon and Arturo Thur de Koós are overseeing for Mattel Films.

“View-Master has long been a window to the wonders of the world, sparking imagination in kids and adults alike,” said Black. “Teaming up with Robbie Brenner and Mattel Films gives us the chance to honor that legacy while creating an entirely new adventure for today’s audience. We can’t wait to bring this treasured toy’s sense of exploration to the big screen.” (via Deadline)
